The Saffron

Laboratory tested according to ISO 3632.

What the laboratory measures, what the numbers mean, and what a real lab sheet shows.

Saffron being measured in a laboratory

Why coloring strength matters

ISO 3632 gives three numbers: colour (crocin), taste (picrocrocin) and aroma (safranal). Coloring strength matters most: the higher it is, the fewer threads you need for the same colour.

How it is tested

  • In two countries

Every shipment is tested in a certified laboratory, in Afghanistan and in the EU.

  • Three measures

Colour (crocin), flavour (picrocrocin) and aroma (safranal), on the same sample, according to ISO 3632.

  • Batch by batch

Crocin target: Premium 245–270+, Royal 270–300+. Actual laboratory results may differ depending on where and how the sample is tested (Afghanistan or the EU).
